Kilo, the 100 pound loggerhead turtle, was released back into the Gulf of Mexico off of South Padre Island on Monday, August 7. Hundreds of people came to watch as the turtle returned home.
After being accidentally hooked by a fisherman in June, Kilo was nursed back to health for two months in Turtle Inc.’s rehab center. Being found anemic, she was given antibiotics and iron supplements to help her return to health. Moreover, Kilo had a GI tract issue that kept her away from the sea. "The x-ray showed that her GI tract was impacted with bone fragments, pieces of crabs, things like that,” Nina Nahvi, licensed veterinarian tech with Sea Turtle Inc.,said. “We think maybe that's why she wasn't feeling well and didn't return to the ocean immediately after she was accidentally hooked." Sea Turtle Inc. is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1977 and is funded by public donations and gift shop sales. Their mission is broken into three parts: education, rehabilitation, and conservation. Public releases like Kilo’s are an effort by the company to educate the public about sea turtles. Clemens High School yearbook staff had the opportunity to view the release, as they were attending the Josten’s Yearbook Camp at the Pearl Resort. “Because they rehabilitated the turtle, it kind of restored my faith in humanity,” Nick McDonald, photography editor, said.
