During these five weeks, spring break occurred and the influx of guests was noticeable. “It was a great place to bring friends and family and an overall magical place to stay,” Jillian Hernandez, Jayde’s twin sister said. Two heated pools, three hot tubs, a dry sauna, an exercise room, mining run, volleyball courts, basketball court, playground equipment, craft room, rec room with a pool table, and gift shop are available amenities when the county is not on mandatory shut down due to Coronavirus. A major event that students look forward to during the spring is prom. Community in Schools (CIS) is a non-profit organization that helps students with school expenses. CIS provides free prom dress to any student. As of now, prom is rescheduled for May 15th, therefore students can look at prom dresses with their friends until the day before prom, or while supplies last.
With the coronavirus spreading rapidly across the United States, most spring sports and activities have either been postponed or cancelled. Most malls and boutiques are not open for prom dress shopping. If student is in need of a prom dress, CIS offers free prom dresses for all students, not just students involved in CIS. These dresses are donated by local stores, and once they are given out, students can keep them. To look at the dresses, students can go to room A200K or A200M after school, or during school as long as they have a pass, and let any CIS coordinator they are in need of a dress. “Any student can get a dress. They don’t have the be a part of CIS. We typically have students bring a group of friends, and they look at the clothing racks together.” CIS coordiantor Ms. Gonzalez, said. “We want to help out the whole campus as much as we can.'' CIS offers free dresses all year round. Students can find a variety of dresses for homecoming, ROTC ball, as well as any other school event. CIS is also looking for dress donations from students. After prom, if students are looking to donate their used prom dress, CIS would be happy to take donations as long as they are not damaged. Anyone who receives a dress will remain anonymous. “I did not know CIS gives away dresses for free; that’s really cool, especially with Coronavirus closing down stores.” Isabella Villereal (11), said. Unfortunately, CIS does not offer suits or alter dresses. They will continue to offer prom dresses until they run out. This is also the first year they are open to taking dress donations. “I think this is a very good way for everyone on campus to help each other,” Villereal said. “We can get a dress for free and clear up some closet space.” -Connie Wiggins- Assistant Editor-in-Chief All over the United States, students have switched to online classes to finish off the school year. Colleges and high schools have both started remote learning to help stop the spread of Coronavirus (aka COVID-19). Classes for schools weren’t postponed until the outbreak of the virus entered their county or the county around them. As students finished up the first week of online classes, the district announced school has been canceled until April 27, 2020.
Remote learning allows for students to receive work with a deadline that is set for the end of the week. This gives students an opportunity to take however long they need to complete the assignments. Working online has been said to be easier than actually going to school. It gives students the opportunity to wear pajamas and have more hours for themselves during the day. “I like the fact that we get all of our work and notes ahead of time, and are able to work on things at our own pace,” Hayden Sharp (11) said. Students are assigned work through google classroom and are given a deadline for when work is due, which means that face to face learning will not be received as often as some students may need. “Online learning will be hard because if you have a question, you can’t just go to your teacher and get taught the way they teach it,” Caleb Syverson (12) said. “So getting tutoring would be more difficult, and if you need face to face learning like me, it can be a struggle at times to retain the information.” Cancellation of school has left seniors wondering what’s going to happen. This year's prom has been pushed back two weeks. While graduation has stayed at the original date, there is a possibility of date changes while more is learned about the outbreak. “I would be sad if we didn’t have a prom, but missing out on our graduation ceremony is probably the worst news that could come from this situation,” Reagon Chester (12) said. “Every senior dreams about walking the stage.” -Haley Welker- Staff Writer In an effort to reduce the spread of the global Coronavirus pandemic, SCUCISD has closed its doors and has switched to online, remote learning. Beginning March 25th, teachers conducted lessons via the app Zoom from the safety of their homes. All extracurriculars have been postponed indefinitely.
"This closure is necessary, but I like having a routine and staying busy,” Sarah Wargo (10). “Online school is easier and it’s nice to work at my own pace.” The district has continued to push back the reopening of schools and plans to resume class on April 27th as of March 23rd. “This virus has taken away valuable time to make memories with my friends before we go our separate ways for college.” Megan Bone (12) said. The U.S. officially surpassed China and Italy in having the most number of confirmed cases (over 100,000 cases and 1600 deaths as of March 27th). The Schertz-Cibolo community has four confirmed cases as of March 26th. “SCUC posted that prom will be rescheduled for May 15th, and graduation should continue as normal. I’m excited,” Megan said. Seniors have experienced increased anxiety as their last three months of high school continue to hang in the balance. Many events, such as Decision Day, continue to be rescheduled. Coronavirus has definitely created a huge obstacle in allowing seniors to enjoy milestones such as prom and graduation, and it’s causing a lot of frustration in the class of 2020,” Katarina Dumas (12) said. “Even with this uncertainty, we’re still finding ways to continue to learn, interact with friends, and stay positive.” -Taylor Trapp- Online Editor-in-Chief Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, is back at it again with his new album named “After Hours.” The album features 14 songs and was released on March 20, 2020. It is his first studio album since 2016’s “Starboy,” and follows the release of his EP “My Dear Melancholy,” which was released in 2018. This is his fourth studio album, which contains almost an hour of new music for fans.
The Weeknd has been popular in the R&B/Pop/Soul genre since 2015 when he released “Beauty Behind the Madness,” which blew up among listeners due to his unique voice and bass-boosting beats. Now, almost five years later, he’s still set to top the Billboard Top 200 for the fourth time. Let’s get into the review for After Hours. This album is the epitome of what fans have come to expect from The Weeknd. It features deep bass drops, high snare pitches, and ethereal vocals. The subject matter of the album seems to be about emotions and love, the usual topic of The Weeknd’s work. This album was released at an unfortunate time, as the coronavirus has taken over the United States and most of the world. However, the emotional tone and deep lyrics can help listeners relieve some stress and relax, which many people probably need right about now. Three songs that really stood out to me were “Heartless,” “Faith” and “Blinding Lights.” While “Heartless” and “Blinding Lights” were released to the public months before the album was released, “Faith” is brand new to the public. All three tracks are catchy, and will leave tunes stuck in the minds of anyone who listens. Moreover, the messages in each song carry an emotional tone that highlights the reason The Weeknd has become so famed: his unmatched vocals with meaningful lyrics. If you have an extra hour, or need something to listen to while you work, I highly suggest listening to the album as a whole, from start to finish. After Hours takes your ears on an emotional journey, leaving you desiring more music and more of Tesfaye’s angelic voice. My rating for “After Hours” is a nine out of ten. -Brady Davis- Print Editor-in-Chief |
